I’m not certain how I got to be so fortunate, but I have a few ideas. In no particular order they are:
- Being in the right place at the right time
- Connecting and continuing to build relationships with some pretty amazing photographers
- Working hard to learn my equipment and even harder to understand the “rules” of photography so I can make the best choices to break them when I choose
- Saying yes to any opportunity that I perceive as something that can help me grow in my photography skills any chance I can
- Being able to “get” photography and have somewhat of an eye for it
- Having a personality that puts others at ease – especially when working with large groups and needing to keep them moving but calm
- The good fortune of having a blessing from the powers that be
I list these items because so many of these are the very comments I have heard from other photographers I have had the good fortune to work with.
For me, so much of where I am right now is because someone took a chance on me – myself (choosing to start my own business), my husband (buying me my 2nd DSLR and encouraging me to reinvest in my business and in myself), clients who trusted me to capture their memories (family sessions, engagement photos, maternity photos, newborn family photos, and so on), my friends and family (for encouraging and supporting me in this endeavor), and so many other people that wanted to help a new person in their field of work learn and grow (like those I have assisted/2nd shot with). For those who fall into this aforementioned statement, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I have been so fortunate to be able to chat with local photographers – from those who are seasoned veterans to those who are starting out just like me. I’ve been able to ask questions and get honest answers. I’ve been able to chat for a few hours and learn a thing or two from other new photographers while also being able to share my experiences with them. It’s been an exciting time to be able to give and receive advice, tips, tricks, and build relationships in uniquely close knit community.
My good fortune is also partially due to the hard work I put in. While working a full time job, I am still able to find personal time to learn more about my talent and how to hone my skills. My husband has been so incredibly supportive and encouraging when it comes to sharing our weekend time with others or my research needs. So much of what I know is through my own education and research. I have been lucky enough to be able to listen to others advise me, show me, and let me try my own things. However, the time, energy, and effort I have put forth to learn outside of this has been great. I am so incredibly lucky to have that time.
Lastly, my good fortune, I believe, is because I have been blessed by the powers that be with so much. I have been blessed with a husband who supports me in a dream that I almost missed seeing. He encourages me and applauds me. He doesn’t 2nd guess my choices and catches my excitement when I share things with him. I have been blessed with a full time job that allows me to be able to support my passion with no issue – the time off on the weekends and nights has enabled me to foster my education and growth without impacting my job duties. I have been blessed with a talent that I felt the need to hone and share with others. While this talent is still young and I’m still working to understand all the ins and outs of it, others see the potential that it could have. The clients that I have and the photographers that have encouraged my growth are such great blessings because they provide me real time constructive feedback to help me truly grow. This is a blessing and I am so lucky that I have the means to develop it. I am also so very thankful that I can share it with you!
While so many people are posting throwback Thursday photos, flashback Friday memories, and all around reminiscing, I’m taking a time out to share with you just how thankful I am for the good fortune and blessings I have regarding my photography business, where I am now, and looking forward to see where the future leads me. I can’t wait to see where I am in a year from now and just how much growth has occurred! Happy Friday friends!
